“A man who works with his hands is a laborer; a man who works with his hands and brain is a craftsman; but a man who works with his hands and his brain and his heart is an artist”.

Wood is one of the most dynamic and hydroscopic materials in nature. Whether in a forest or a home, the laws of biophysics mandate the wood must constantly expand and contract while trying to reach moisture equilibrium with its environment. This movement is continuous throughout the seasons of the year until the wood either rots or is burned. And no method or effort made by man can stop this process. This is why it is so vital that the furniture maker have a deep understanding of wood science and wood movement; and then employ the correct joinery techniques so the wood can continue to move as it must.

I incorporate this knowledge that has been passed down to each generation of makers for centuries in every piece of furniture that I design and build. This ensures that the furniture will remain structurally stable and as beautiful functional pieces of art for the next two hundred plus years.

Since we all live with and use furniture in our lives on a daily basis, these pieces become a part of us and our family. Thereby the furniture becomes more than just the wood itself. Furniture becomes a container of our memories and a reflection of our lives and dreams. And that is why fine furniture becomes emotional heirlooms meant to be passed down from generation to generation.

Office Bureau Table

Dimensions: 18”W x 46”L x 40”H

Primary Wood: Sapele (African Mahogany)

Secondary Wood: Tiger Stripe Curly Maple & Tulip Poplar

Accent Wood: Cherry Banding, Inlays, & Stringing

Wood Veneer (s): Curly Sapele & Pommele Sapele

Price: $ 9,000.00

This bureau table is constructed of Sapele as the primary wood. With the exception of milling the rough lumber, the mortise and tenon joinery, twin tenons, dovetailed top dividers (into top legs), and the half-blind and through dovetails for the drawers and trays were done with hand tools. The rails and drawer fronts came from single boards (respectively) to ensure a continuous and uninterrupted grain flow and pattern across their surfaces. Curly Sapele veneers were used for the table's sides and back, and premium Pommele Sapele veneer was used in the table top. Tiger/curly maple make up the drawer and tray sides, along with Tulip Poplar for other secondary wooden elements. All inlays and stringing were made from curly Cherry. Each of the eight Sapele tapered legs have collar, waist, and cuff curly Cherry banding.

The three drawers have traditional solid wooden bottoms (built for seasonal wood movement) with leather drawer stops and leather drawer bottom lining. All drawers are wood on wood operation and have an inlaid Cherry stringing in the shop designed and built drawer pulls.

The two side drawers are for filing purposes. They have Sapele file dividers and each has an unseen compartment for private documents. The center drawer contains two spaces. The lower space is for office accessories, i.e.; computer cables, staplers, hole punches, etc. The upper space has a sliding tray for office supplies, i.e.; pens/pencils, paper clips, USB drives, etc. Both the drawer and tray have leather lined bottoms.

The table frame was finished with multiple coats of oil/varnish, with a hand rubbed out finish. The drawers (interior and sides) were finished with multiple coats of 1.5# Super Blond shellac. The table top was finished with oil/varnish, multiple coats of 1.5# Super Blonde shellac, along with a topcoat of lacquer for water protection and durability.  All surfaces received a final coat of premium wax, hand buffed for a final finish.

Breakfast Room Sideboard Table

Dimensions: 21”W x 40”L x 30”H

Primary Wood: American Red Oak

Secondary Wood: Tulip Poplar

Accent Wood: African Wenge Inlays & Breadboard Ends

Price: $1,200

The original design intent for this piece of furniture was to be used as a breakfast room sideboard for a brunch type of serving table. The extra wide single drawer is sized to accept place mats, charger plates, and serving utensils. However this table could also easily serve as a laptop computer/writing desk or a versatile table in many other areas of the home.

This table is constructed of American Red Oak as its primary wood, with Tulip Poplar as its secondary wood. The breadboard ends, leg caps, and inlays are from African Wenge. The breadboard ends keep the top flat as well as allow the red oak top to expand and contract with seasonal movement. The single drawer (wood on wood operation) is built with hand cut through dovetails. The single drawer pull is made from African Wenge and is my signature shop built drawer pull design. The red oak drawer front is cut from the same board as the front apron, so the wood grain is uninterrupted and flows continuously across the front of the table.

The finish consists of hand rubbed oil/varnish with multiple coats of 1.5# Super Blonde shellac. For moisture protection, the top is finished with a urethane varnish blend. A hand rubbed coat of premium Liberon Black Bison wax completes the final finishing detail.

Beal Street Mirror

Dimensions: 3/4”W x 37”L x 25”H

Primary Wood: American Red Oak

Price: $400

Made from American Red Oak, this large mirror could be placed in many spaces in the home or office. Whether combined with an entry table in a foyer or hallway, or hung by itself in a living room or bedroom, it is both functional and beautiful. The natural patina of the red oak allows this mirror to look great with many décor styles from traditional craftsman to contemporary Asian homes.

The mirror is simple in design, with very strong bridle joints at the corners. The grooved edge details along the sides form subtle squares at both the top and bottom corners. Heavy duty “Eagle” mounting hardware is included, and installs as a French cleat attachment system.

Because mirrors usually tend to be the most focal point in a space, the design challenge was to create a strong and yet understated mirror frame that would complement, and not compete with, the other wall or room furnishings. It’s a delicate balance to achieve, but I believe that this frame meets that objective.

Note: The entry table shown in some of the mirror images is no longer available and has been previously sold.
